The Backpacker

backpacker information and tips about travelling, working and more

This might be a difiicult question that many backpackers have to deal with when planning their trip. Does a backpacker have to travel with a backpack or is it better trailing a trolley instead of carrying a heavy backpack on one’s back? Let’s compare the advantages and disadvantages of a backpack vs. a trolley for backpackers:

Pros of a backpack

backpack

backpack

  • looks more like a backpacker ;)
  • easier to handle in the city
  • easier to handle on bumpy ground
  • less space required in trunk when backpacking with a car or camper van
  • hands are free

Cons of a backpack

  • heavy to lift on your back
  • expensive to buy
  • might suffer from transportation in the plane (you know how airport guys often handle baggage…)
  • usually provides less space than a trolley
  • not possible to lock the backpack
  • not easy to find things in the backpack
  • much effort to get rid of bedbugs from your backpack

Pros of a trolley

trolley

trolley

  • you might already have a trolley so you don’t need to buy something for your baggage and spend the money elsewhere
  • reuse it for upcoming trips after your backpacking tour
  • just pulling instead of heavy uplifting to your back
  • lots of space (depending of the trolley size)
  • usually less damage on transport
  • trolleys are often lockable
  • easier to find things
  • in case you get in touch with bedbugs a hardcase trolley can easily be cleaned, a backpack has to be frozen or washed

Cons of a trolley

  • not useful on bumpy ground
  • needs more space in a car or camper van
  • needs more space when opened

Tips for the best choice

Everybody has to choose which suits best to fulfil their requirements. The most important thing is to think about your personal needs and plans about our trip.

To sum it up backpackers that are mostly travelling on bumpy ground or by car or camper van might better use a backpack instead of a trolley as it needs less space in the trunk. For those, who don’t want to lift a heavy backpack or like to lock stuff (e.g. cameras or laptops) it might be a good idea to use a trolley.

If you choose a backpack you should use a protection accessoire for transportation as the ribbons are very likely to be damaged. Even if you are travelling with a trolley and have more space for your stuff you should consider what you really need.

What about you? What do you think is more valuable for backpacking? A backpack or a trolley? Leave a comment and tell us why you prefer the one or the other.
