Las Vegas is famous for its glamour, casinos and luxury. But even as a backpacker you can have a nice trip visiting the city in the desert of Nevada. Don’t forget that Las Vegas isn’t always warm. In winter, you should bring warm clothes, especially for the evenings as it can be cold in the desert.
Accommodation:
If you stay a little off the Strip you can save money as there are cheaper motels, hotels or other accommodations. Most of the time nights are paid per room so if you are travelling with other people and stay in one room your travel expenses might be a lot less. We stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton which was not too expensive. The hotel is close to Stratosphere Tower and a little bit off the Strip but connected to other Hotels with the Monorail transportation system.
Getting around:
You don’t need a car in Las Vegas. Use the Monorail (if staying for more days it might be cheaper to buy a ticket valid for several days) to get around the big hotels on the Strip. Buses are also operating. If you’re on a domestic flight to Vegas you should go for Virigin America which was really great for us flying out to San Francisco!
Shopping:
Fashion Show Mall is only one of Las Vegas’ malls where you can shop til you drop. You’ll also find some Outlets at the northern and the southern part of the Strip with lots of Outlet Stores of Adidas, Fossil and other big brands. The malls can be reached by bus as well.
Gambling:
Everyone visiting Las Vegas has to gamble at least once during his stay. You can find Casinos with Poker tables, Slot Machines, Roulette, etc. in almost every hotel and even at the airport you can spend your last coins gambling. Out tip: set a limit for gambling that you can afford to loose.
Photography:
Las Vegas is beautiful at night when all the glitter and glamour comes out. Make sure you’ve got your tripod with you to do some longexposure shots on the Strip. There are awesome views of Las Vegas at night from some of the bridges:
Top things to visit or do in Las Vegas:
- Bellagio fountains (every 30 mins during the day, every 15 mins in the evening)
- The Venetian with its lovely inside canals and shops
- Las Vegas Premium Outlets North or South
- Stratosphere Tower Observation desk or Freefall tower
- Visit the old casinos at Fremont street
- Gamble at least a tiny bit in one of the casinos
If you have some time left you could rent a car and visit the Hoover Dam and maybe watch sunrise if you are early enough. Another trip you might want to do when visiting Las Vegas is to see Grand Canyon. As the canyon is about 500 kilometres away from Vegas you should take a plane or helicopter getting there. People told us about their trip and were very happy having done it.
So, whatever you’ll do when you’re in Las Vegas keep in mind that:
What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas – or: What happens in Vegas never happened!
